Agenda Item #24 Item Title C-23 2009-2010 Title IV Safe and Drug-Free Schools Grant Issue/Rationale Safe and Drug-Free Schools is federally funded through Title IV, Part A of No Child Left Behind. It's purpose is to assist school districts in their substance abuse and violence prevention efforts by providing funds to: Support effective programs that prevent violence in and around schools; Support effective programs that prevent the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs; Support services and activities, such as K-12 science-validated prevention curricula, school climate approaches, conflict resolution, social skill development, student assistance programs, parent programs, and peer mediation programs; Train teachers and other program implementers in drug and violence prevention science; Coordinate community efforts to promote safe and drug free schools; Recruit partners to make programs optimally effective for our youth and community. Recommended Action Approve the 2009-2010 Title IV grant proposal as presented. Financial Impact $86,237 Title IV entitlement funds will be used to support activities or programs in our schools that comply with the Principles of Effectiveness (POE) described in subsection 4115(a) of NCLB and foster a safe and drug-free learning environment that supports academic achievement [NCLB 4114(d)(1) and 4115(a)].
