November 22, 2011 Regular Meeting Agenda Item #43 Item Title Class Size Flexibility Issue/Rationale Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, Florida Statute 1003.03(2)(b) authorizes flexibility in class assignments for students enrolling after the October membership survey.  A student who enrolls after the October survey may be assigned to an existing class even though such assignment will result in the class temporarily exceeding the maximum number of students if the School Board makes a determination that it is impractical, educationally unsound or disruptive to student learning not to assign the student to the class.  Approval of this item, thereby making such a determination, gives flexibility by allowing up to three (3) students above the maximum may be assigned to a teacher in kindergarten through grade 3, and up to five (5) students above the maximum may be assigned to a teacher in grades 4 through 12.  The district must develop a plan that provides that the school will be in full compliance with class size maximums by the next October student membership survey.
