Agenda Item #42 Item Title Merit Award Program Issue/Rationale Merit Award Program legislation designed to award teachers was signed into law on March 29, 2007. To access the appropriation, districts were required to submit a plan in accordance with the provisions of the new law. Recommended Action The Superintendent recommends approval of the Merit Award Program plan previously presented to the Board on September 17, 2007, for the purpose of rewarding teacher performance. Financial Impact The appropriation from the state for Clay District Schools is $2,027,895.00. According to legislation, awards to teachers are based on supervisor/principal evaluation and student performance and may range from five (5) to ten (10) percent of the district's average teacher salary. Implementation costs will include associated expenses with creating and scoring end-of-course examinations. The MAP appropriation may not be used for this purpose. Note: If an impasse is declared resulting from a dispute over the Merit Award Program, the dispute would be subject to an expedited impasse hearing. Submitted By Toni A.
