Title
C12 - Permission to Publish an advertisement for Social Studies Textbook adoption
Description

The Pre-Adoption Selection Committee was comprised of a teacher representative from each campus and  in each content/grade band. The committee met on November 17, 2016 and thoroughly reviewed all available curriculum options from the state adoption list. The grade-level teams worked to apply rigorous alignment criteria using evaluation tools provided by the Instructional Resources Department and the K-12 Social Studies Curriculum Specialist to each selection to determine the top two products that would best meet the needs of the students of Clay County.

The top two products selected for each grade/subject were then posted on the Instructional Resources page of the District’s website. The public was encouraged to view the products and there were corresponding surveys posted for them to complete and express their individual comments and/or concerns about each one. In addition to the website surveys, the Instructional Resources Team sent a survey to each teacher of a grade/subject being considered in this adoption.  This helped gather additional input from stakeholders and identified the products they believed would best serve our students’ Social Studies needs.

The adoption was temporarily placed on hold in order to evaluate all K-12 Core Curriculums currently in use in Clay County. Secondary Social Studies teachers reconvened on March 7 to continue the work of adopting grades 6-12 textbooks. Final surveys were sent to all grades 6-12 Social Studies teachers on March 30 in order to finalize the vetting process and produce a final vote. In an effort to be as transparent as possible, the surveys provided detailed information along with the price of each product being considered.  Votes are due to the Instructional Resources Office by April 5 in order to comply with the 30-day window and to ensure an expedited delivery of materials to campuses.

Gap Analysis

Instructional materials for Social Studies were last adopted in 2011 and purchased in 2012. The findings of the review of all K-12 Core Curriculums determined that secondary social studies needed to be the primary focus and that materials more closely aligned to current standards are needed. The instructional materials that have been selected will provide the teachers of Clay County with high quality materials that they feel will best serve the students of our county.

Previous Outcomes

The Florida Department of Education only measures student progress for Civics (7th grade) and United States History (11th Grade).  Currently, Clay County is ranked 5th in the state in Civics and 9th in U.S. History.

Expected Outcomes

This proposed adoption would provide the teachers of Clay County current, quality materials to enable them the ability to deliver and plan engaging lessons, and provide students with the resources to maximize learning and increase student outcomes in social studies.

Strategic Plan Goal

Improve the instructional framework, processes, and structures that enrich student achievement.

Recommendation

Instructional Resources is asking the Clay County School Board to approve the publishing of an advertisement in the Clay Today, informing the public of a hearing on the newly vetted Social Studies textbooks. A Textbook Adoption Committee of certified teachers met to vet the options for all courses being considered.  The committee members consisted of one representative from each school in each subject area and/or grade level in the Clay County School District. The review process was conducted and guided using Student Achievement Partners Instructional Materials Evaluation Tools (IMET), a review of the NGSSS for Social Studies found on CPALMS,  and was verified via a state approved feedback form that the committee used to report their findings.  In accordance with the Florida State Statute 1006.283, the CCSB is required to give prior notice of newly selected curriculum.
