Title
C8 - Permission to Publish an Advertisement for K-12 Math Textbook Adoption
Description

The Pre-Adoption Selection Committee was comprised of a teacher representative from each of the 41  campuses and in each content/grade band. The committees met on Sept 24th-(Grades 6-8 & Alg 1), Sept 27th-(Grades 9-12) and Sept 28th, as well as Nov 1-(Grades K-5). The committee thoroughly reviewed all available curriculum options from the state adoption list. The teams worked to apply rigorous alignment criteria using evaluation tools provided by the Instructional Resources Department and the Math Curriculum Specialists to each selection to determine the top two products that would best meet the needs of the students of Clay County.

The top two products selected for each grade/subject were then posted on the Instructional Resources page of the District’s website. The public was encouraged to view the products and there were corresponding surveys posted for them to complete and express their individual comments and/or concerns about each one. In addition to the website surveys, the Instructional Resources Team sent a survey to each teacher of a grade/subject being considered in this adoption.  This helped gather additional input from stakeholders and identified the products they believed would best serve our students’ math needs.

In order to finalize the vetting process and produce a final selection, all district math teachers were asked to  provide feedback about the two choices and the ability of each to meet the needs of their students. In an effort to be as transparent as possible, the surveys provided detailed information about each product being considered.  Feedback was due to the Instructional Resources Office by Nov 9, 2018, in order to comply with the 30-day window and to ensure an expedited delivery of materials to campuses.

In order to get feedback from community stakeholders, the top two choices decided on by the committee, were displayed in the Teacher Training Center on Oct 4th  and Nov 1 for all parents and stakeholders to review, discuss content concerns with the specialists, address adoption concerns, and provide feedback. After the feedback time window has closed, the top selection for math adoption in all grades will be displayed for public viewing on Dec 6th at the Teacher Training Center.

Gap Analysis

Instructional materials for Math were last up for adoption in 2012 for K-5. At that time, Go Math! Florida was adopted. In 2013,  Go Math! Florida was adopted for grades 6&7 Advanced and Carnegie was adopted for grades 6-8 standard.  Also in 2013, for grades 9-12, the district adopted Carnegie for Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry as well as Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications and PreCalculus: Mathematics for Calculus. The instructional materials that have been selected will provide the teachers of Clay County with high-quality materials that they feel will best serve the students of our county.

Previous Outcomes

K-12 Math is currently up for adoption 2018-2019. Statute requires a district to adopt within two years and to fully purchase within three years. F.S. 1006.283  Requires a public hearing to be posted in a publication 20 calendar days prior to the event in order for the public to be made fully aware of the District’s intentions.

Expected Outcomes

This proposed adoption would provide the teachers of Clay County current, quality, and better-aligned materials to enable them the ability to deliver and plan engaging lessons, and provide students with the resources to maximize learning and increase student outcomes in math

Strategic Plan Goal

Goal 1: Develop Great Educators and Leaders.  Strategy 1.1: Develop a high quality and aligned instructional system.

Recommendation

Instructional Resources is asking the Clay County School Board to approve the publishing of an advertisement in the Clay Today, informing the public of a hearing on the newly vetted Math textbooks. A Textbook Adoption Committee of certified teachers met to vet the options for all courses being considered.  The committee members consisted of one representative from each school in each subject area and/or grade level in the Clay County School District. The review process was conducted and guided using a comprehensive rubric that aligned curricula to materials, a review of the NGSSS for Science found on CPALMS,  and was verified via a state-approved feedback form that the committee used to report their findings. In accordance with the Florida State Statute 1006.283, the CCSB is required to give prior notice of the newly selected curriculum.
