Title
C5 - Approve Penda Learning Amendment to Add Third Grade
Description

Penda Learning, contract #210122, was implemented in grades four through ten on August 1, 2021.  The contract is effective through July 31, 2024.  This request is for the addition of grade three.

Gap Analysis

Penda Learning offers differentiated instructional and remediation modules for grades 3-8 and biology that allow teachers to meet the needs of every student in their classroom. Programs such as Penda Learning are an essential component of blended learning, which is necessary for student achievement. Each highly-engaging instructional module is aligned to our current Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) benchmarks and features differentiated instruction in developing, achieving, and excelling modules for each benchmark. Lessons use real-world experiences and authentic situations to teach essential skills. Explicit instruction makes concepts concrete and addresses the root cause of any specific areas of student needs. Penda’s automated reports provide insightful data to monitor progress and target interventions within a Response to Intervention (RTI) or Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework.

Delivery is flexible: during school, before/after school, in-class/pull-out, summer school, at home, computer lab, and in a host of other settings. Penda Learning operates on a “gamification” platform, which allows students to choose virtual avatars from a highly diverse list so that students from all backgrounds can feel represented. Students can compete with classmates and unlock new accessories for their virtual avatars based on the points they earn from the modules.

Previous Outcomes

From our initial contract with Penda Learning, we have observed a steady increase in Science Achievement in state-tested grades (5, 8, and 10) and local benchmark assessments for grades 4-10.

Expected Outcomes

With the addition of third grade, we expect to see even more significant gains in science achievement and reduce pressure on third-grade teachers to address science when reading is the priority for promotion to fourth grade.

Strategic Plan Goal

Goal 1: Develop Great Educators and Leaders

Strategy 1.3 Prepare all students to be full option graduates who are prepared for college, eligible to enlist in military services, or able to compete in the workforce.

Recommendation

That the School Board approves the amendment to purchase Penda Learning for grade three.
