C8 - Request for contracted services with Melissa Whitaker.
Description

As a Federal requirement for Title I, Part A Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged Set-Aside, the contractor will work under the coordination of school social workers, Suzanne Church and Barbara Castelli. Responsibilities include site visits to assist homeless families with community services; work with school attendance secretaries to ensure data is correct; assist with coordination of tutoring services provided through Title IX, Part A; other needs as called upon by the Assistant Superintendent of Climate and Culture or social workers.

Gap Analysis

The Title IX Grant funded through the McKinney-Vento Act provides academic tutoring, supplies and social work services to 1113 homeless Clay County students.  As a required set aside in the Title I Part A grant. additional support is provided to homeless families and students through this contract.

Previous Outcomes

Services such as:

  • Transportation facilitation (85% - 67 out of 79 students requesting transportation to the school of origin received services)
  • Expeditious enrollment (100% of students marking homeless on the enrollment form were placed immediately)
  • Immediate issuance of Free and Reduced Lunch (100% of students marking  homeless on the enrollment form received same day free service)

These are among the services the PROJECT REACH KIDS student services contractor facilitates.  Meeting the needs of students, matching them with basic school supplies, clothing and food are all in a day's work in this office.

Expected Outcomes

Improvement of services to homeless students with specific goals of:

  • Transportation facilitation (88% of students requesting transportation to the school of origin receive services)
  • Expeditious enrollment (maintain 100% receiving same day enrollment)
  • Maintain immediate issuance of Free and Reduced Lunch (100% of students marking homeless on the enrollment form receive same day service).
Strategic Plan Goal

All students can learn and that is the responsibility of the school district and all stakeholders to ensure that each child meets and/or exceeds his/her potential.

It is the responsibility of the school district to ensure all students graduate from high school with academic and/or work force readiness skills that will provide each student the opportunity for admission into post secondary education or to enter the job market equipped for personal and professional success.

Recommendation

That the Clay County District School Board approve the agreement for services to homeless students.
