Title
D6 - Public Hearing to Approve Textbook for Environmental Science
Description

The School Board recognizes the emphasis of Environmental Science new science course progression beginning in the 17-18 school year. The district is implementing the course progression to support the needs of all students. The prerequisite standards for the Biology course (#2000320), which is a graduation requirement, are largely covered in the Environmental Science course and will build a foundation of knowledge for students to be successful when enrolled in Biology. The Environmental Science course also counts as one science credit for graduation, as required by the Florida Department of Education. A cohort of science teachers reviewed three title from the state adoption list over the course of three weeks. All three were uploaded to the Instructional Resources website for public review. On May 22, 2017, Environmental Science teachers from each high school came to consensus on the selection of HMH Environmental Science textbook ISBN#978-0-547-90400-9.

Gap Analysis

The Environmental Science textbook that is currently used in Clay County Schools was published in 2006. This textbook will be the first of the new adoption cycle to be endorsed and purchased under the revised course progression for high school science.

Previous Outcomes

The Environmental Science course was not previously included in the course progression prior to the 2017-18 school year. Therefore, the district did not have an updated resource or adequate total to meet the needs of all students under the new course progression.

Expected Outcomes

The proposed adoption will provide Clay County a viable instructional resource for teachers to plan and deliver engaging lessons. Students will be able to interact with the instructional material to maximize learning outcomes and increase achievement in Environmental Science.

Strategic Plan Goal

Engage community members and teachers to establish their voices as advocates for Clay County students.

Recommendation

That the Clay County School Board hold a public hearing to approve the purchase of the HMH Environmental Science textbook.
