March 2, 2017 - Regular School Board Meeting
Title
C10 - Economics with Financial Literacy Adoption
Description

The Instructional Resources Department is seeking the permission to advertise to the public in the  Clay Today that the Economics with Financial Literacy course is up for adoption. A public hearing will be held at the board meeting on April 6, 2017.

Gap Analysis: The last adoption cycle for Economics was in 2011. A year later, the state attached 109 additional financial literacy standards to Economics for a semester course. Publishers rushed to add materials to what was already packaged; therefore, these standards were not properly aligned or included. This adoption would allow the teachers of Economics with Financial Literacy the ability to have currently aligned curriculum to instruct every senior in the county for this required course.

Previous Outcomes: Economics with Financial Literacy is currently up for adoption 2016-2017. Statute requires a district to adopt within two years and three years to fully purchase. State Statute 1006.283 requires a public hearing be posted in a publication 30 days prior to the event in order for the public to be made fully aware of the District's intentions.

Expected Outcomes:

The public is made aware of the hearing in order to have a voice in the final selection for Economics and Finical Literacy.

Strategic Plan Goal:

Engage community members and teachers to establish their voices as advocates for Clay County students.

Recommendation

Instructional Resources is asking the Clay County School Board to approve the publishing of an advertisement in the Clay Today, informing the public of a hearing on the newly vetted Economics with Financial Literacy course. Teachers met on November 17, 2016 and vetted this publisher along with others to find what they determined the best fit for our student's needs. The District Committee approved the teacher's first choice after reviewing their consensus forms.

In accordance with the Florida State Statute 1006.283, the CCSB is required to give prior notice of newly selected curriculum.
