Title
D3 - Public Hearing to approve the adoption of French Materials
Description

The district has not adopted French books in many years. The teachers have not had any materials and/or textbooks to use with the students taking French. There are currently four teachers teaching French to a total of 209 students across the district at three schools (MHS, RHS, and KHH). We were assisting teachers trying to stay within copyright laws while teaching foreign language. This was an area not supported with any current instructional material; therefore, it was imperative that they be provided materials to best fit their students' needs.

Recommendation

The state sent names of three companies that were on their adoption list for our district to vet. Three of the four teachers met after school on Monday, September 12, 2016 to come to a consensus. All teachers were sent all three textbooks samples prior to the 12th to review. The teachers then discussed and determined that EMC was the best for French Levels I & II. Vista Higher Learning, which is currently the adopted publisher for Spanish, was better suited for the upper levels due to the rigor of the text itself. The Instructional Resource Department met with them to finalize their decision and advertised for the Public Hearing to adopt the French Instructional Materials to be held November 22.  It is the hope of this department to have the orders placed for French by December, EMC's bid for levels I & II came in just under $13,000 for the entire life of the adoption and serves 113 students currently. Vista Higher Learning is scheduled to be purchased in the Spring when next year's funds are released at a cost of $4,500 and will serve the remaining 25 students. This will complete all foreign language adoptions for our district.
