Prior to adoption, the following speakers from the audience addressed items on the Consent agenda:

  • C-5 Tracy Butler - regarding staffing allocations and reduction in force
  • C-5 Renna Lee Paiva - regarding staffing allocation reductions and the effects on class size 
  • C-6 Renna Lee Paiva - encouraging the Board to voice the district's legislative  concerns in Tallahassee

At the request of the Board chairman, Jeff Umbaugh spoke briefly and recapped his recent visit to Tallahassee where he was able to speak before the Senate Education Committee regarding Senate Bills which pertain to the Florida Standards Assessments and the state's accountability system.

43. Recognition of Dr. Copeland

Minutes: Superintendent Van Zant recognized Dr. George Copeland who will be retiring on March 13, 2015, after 19 years of service as the Assistant Superintendent for Business Affairs.  

44. Communications Update

Minutes: Carl Hendrick introduced the following members of the Information Services team who are helping to develop some new products and enhance the school district's communications: Duane Weeks, Sabrina Thomas, Gavin Rollins. Mr. Rollins navigated through a powerpoint presentation of the new applications and systems that are now available to Clay County students, parents and the community.
45. Ford Next Generation Learning (NGL) High School Academy Update - Tom Besaw, National Team Member and National Advocate for Ford NGL

Minutes: Mr. Besaw was sick and unable to attend. 
46. Career &Technical Education Proclamation - Chereese Stewart, Director of Career & Technical Education

Minutes: February is Career & Technical Education month. Mrs. Stewart talked briefly about CTE and thanked the Board for their support of the Academy programs.
47. Clay County Fair - Pete Sutton, General Manager

Minutes: Mr. Sutton spoke briefly about the upcoming Clay County Agricultural Fair which is being held April 2-11, 2015.
48. Village Improvement Association of Green Cove Springs - Clara Freeman, VIA Historian

Minutes: Mrs. Freeman touched on a little history of the VIA and thanked the Board for their support.
49. Take Stock in Children - John Wakefield, College Success Coach

Minutes: Mr. Wakefield was unable to attend.  In his absence, Chairman McKinnon made positive comments about the Take Stock in Children program.

Minutes: The following speakers from the audience addressed this item: Amy Page and Kevin Bily. Mrs. Denemark spoke about her disappointment with funding conditions that are affecting the students.

Superintendent's Requests

Minutes: Superintendent Van Zant gave a briefing of the Legislative cycle and the district's upcoming External Review.

School Board's Requests


Board Members made positive comments about recent school events they attended over the last month.

There was Board discussion about legal cases and expenses.  A request was made to have this topic placed on the next school board meeting agenda and for Mr. Sikes to provide an update on pending litigation, as well as a recommendation for future attorney services. 

Mrs. Condon reported information she learned from the Florida DOE Cost Report for 2013-14, that Clay County ranks 2nd in the state for applying 66.18% of our revenue directly into our classrooms.
