Title D6 - Public Hearing to Approve as advertised, Science Textbook Adoption for Grades K-12 | ||
Description The Instructional Resources Department is seeking the permission to adopt and purchase K-12 Science Textbooks. The Pre-Adoption Selection Committee was comprised of a teacher representative from each of the 41 campuses and in each content/grade band, a union representative for each group, and a campus administrator. The committees met on Oct 20th-(K-2), Oct 23rd-(Grades 3-8), Oct 25th-(Biology), Oct 26th- (Grades 9-12). The committee thoroughly reviewed all available curriculum options from the state adoption list. The teams worked to apply rigorous alignment criteria using evaluation tools provided by the Instructional Resources Department and the Science Curriculum Specialists to each selection to determine the top two products that would best meet the needs of the students of Clay County. The top two products selected for each grade/subject were then posted on the Instructional Resources page of the District website. The public was encouraged to view the products and there were corresponding surveys posted for them to compare and express their individual comments and/or concerns about each one. In addition to the website surveys, the Instructional Resources Team sent a survey to each teacher of a grade/subject being considered in this adoption. This helped gather additional information for stakeholders and identified the products they believed would best serve our students’ science needs. The results were as follows for K-12 Science Adoption: K-12 Science Adoption Final Results Resources that will come with this adoption package for students and teachers: Grade K Student: Florida Student Edition Interactive Worktext Print Subscription (5-Year) Florida ED Online Student Edition (5-Year) Florida Downloadable Student Edition PDF Teacher Florida Teacher Edition Florida ED Online Teacher Digital Management Center (5-Year) Florida Downloadable Teacher Resource Tool Florida Big Book of Science Vocabulary Florida Inquiry Flip Chart Picture Sorting Cards Florida Big Book of Songs and Rhymes Grade 1-2 Student Florida Student Edition Interactive Worktext Print Subscription (5-Year) Florida ED Online Student Edition (5-Year) Florida Downloadable Student Edition PDF Teacher Florida Teacher Edition Florida ED Online Teacher Digital Management Center (5-Year) Florida Downloadable Teacher Resource Tool Florida Assessment Guide Grade 3-5 Student Florida Student Edition Interactive Worktext Print Subscription (5-Year) Florida ED Online Student Edition (5-Year) Florida Downloadable Student Edition PDF Florida Statewide Science Assessment Review and Practice Student Edition (5-Year) Teacher Florida Teacher Edition Florida ED Online Teacher Digital Management Center (5-Year) Florida Downloadable Teacher Resource Tool Florida Assessment Guide Florida Statewide Science Assessment Review and Practice Teacher Edition Grade 6-8 Student Florida Student Edition Interactive Worktext Print-Subscription (5-Year) Florida Online Student Interactive Digital Curriculum (5-Year) Florida Online Student Edition eTextbook ePub (5-Year) Florida Downloadable Student Edition PDF Florida Statewide Science Assessment Review and Practice Student Edition Print Subscription (5-Year) Teacher Florida Teacher Edition Florida Online Teacher Digital Management Center (5-Year) Florida Downloadable Teacher Resource Tool Florida Assessment Guide Florida Lab Manual Florida Statewide Science Assessment Review and Practice Teacher Edition Biology Student Florida Student Edition Florida Interactive Online Student Edition (5-Year) Florida Downloadable Student Edition PDF Biology Florida Interactive Reader Print Subscription (5-Year) Biology Engineering Design Guide Student Edition Biology Florida Standards Workbook Student Edition Biology Florida Standards Review and Practice Teacher Florida Teacher Edition Online Florida Hybrid Teacher Digital Management Center (5-Year) Florida Downloadable Teacher Resource Tool Biology Florida Interactive Reader Answer Key Biology Engineering Design Guide Teacher Edition Biology Florida Standards Workbook Teacher Edition Biology Florida Standards Review and Practice Answer Key Chemistry Student Florida Student Edition Hybrid Florida Interactive Online Student Edition 5-Year Florida Downloadable Student Edition PDF Chemistry Interactive Reader 5-Year Print Subscription Chemistry Engineering Design Guide Student Edition Chemistry Florida Standards Workbook Student Edition Teacher Florida Teacher Edition Online Florida Hybrid Teacher Digital Management Center 5-Year Florida Downloadable Teacher Resource Tool Chemistry Interactive Reader Answer Key Chemistry Engineering Design Guide Teacher Edition Chemistry Florida Standards Workbook Teacher Edition Physics Student Florida Student Edition Hybrid Florida Interactive Online Student Edition 5-Year Downloadable Florida Student Edition PDF Physics Interactive Reader 5-Year Print Subscription Physics Engineering Design Guide Student Edition Physics Florida Standards Workbook Student Edition Teacher Florida Teacher Edition Online Florida Hybrid Teacher Digital Management Center (5-Year) Florida Downloadable Teacher Resource Tool Physics Interactive Reader Answer Key Physics Engineering Design Guide Teacher Edition Physics Florida Standards Workbook Teacher Edition Environmental Science Student Student Edition Student Edition eTextbook ePub (5-Year) Study Guide Teacher Teacher Edition Interactive Online Edition (5-Year) Anatomy & Physiology These are a different publisher (Goodheart-Wilcox). Gap Analysis Instructional materials for Science were last up for adoption in 2012. The District purchased only 3-8 materials, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. K-2 was last purchased in 2002, and Anatomy and Physiology was last purchased in 2006. K-12 Science Core data determined that materials were needed that were more closely aligned to current standards of study. The instructional materials that have been selected will provide the teachers of Clay County with high quality materials that they feel will best serve the students of our county. Professional Development required to implement new instructional materials in the past has been necessary as indicated by teacher input and scores. The following is an Implementation Plan for the new Science Instructional Materials that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) and Goodheart-Wilcox will provide to ensure our teachers are properly trained. HMH Upcoming Dates: Feb 5/6 – Community Science Fair; gr 6-12 – set up on the 5th May 11th – Train the Trainer Getting Started (Instructional Coaches) June 11 - Teachers – Virtual Overviews – K8: 9-10:30; HS: 1-2:30; K8: 5-6:30 July 25th – FL Science Leadership Training (APs) Aug 1 – Teachers – Getting Started with FL Science K5 – 2 sessions (am/pm; 8:00-11:00/12:00-3:00) Aug 2 – Teachers – Getting Started with FL Science 9-12 (am, 8:00-11:00); 6-8 (pm, 12:00-3:00) Aug 8-10 – Teachers – Getting Started with FL Science K-12

Previous Outcomes K-12 Science is currently up for adoption 2017-2018. Statute requires a district to adopt within two years and fully purchase within three years. F. S 1006.283 requires a public hearing to be posted in a publication 20 calendar days prior to the event for the public to be made fully aware of the District’s intentions. The Legal Public Notice was published in the Clay Today on Jan 11,2018.

Expected Outcomes This adoption would provide the teachers of Clay County current, quality materials to enable them the ability to deliver and plan engaging lessons, and provide students with the resources to maximize learning and increase student outcomes in science. By providing the teachers with training and a complete adoption package, the expected result would be an increase in classroom rigor and aligned instruction, which would yield an increase in state science assessment scores.
