Mrs. April Shipley, Math Curriculum Coach, recognized the winners of Math Field Day.

Elementary students in grades 4 through 6 competed in team events during Math Field Day, held on April 18, 2026, at Fleming Island High School. The first place teams from the event were recognized:

• Sixth Grade - Fleming Island Elementary

Kelly Watt, Chief of Staff, introduced the graduating seniors serving on the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council and spoke about the council’s role in providing student input and strengthening communication between district leadership and students. Mrs. Watt recognized the students for their leadership, professionalism, and commitment to their schools and thanked Superintendent Broskie for supporting student leadership opportunities throughout the district. Superintendent Broskie joined Mrs. Watt in presenting honor cords to the graduating senior council members.

Taylor White, Chairman of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, addressed the board regarding the council’s work during the school year, including student feedback related to communication, mental health, and district initiatives. White also announced plans for student representation and perspectives to be shared regularly at future board meetings.

In collaboration with Florida PrePaid, Superintendent Broskie recognized recipients of the Superintendent's Florida Prepaid Scholarship for the fourth consecutive year. Recipients of a 2-year college scholarship are:

• Mark Sumpter, Orange Park High School
• Chloe Toney, Middleburg High School

Superintendent Broskie recognized Tammy Miller of Fleming Island Elementary School as a Florida Department of Education (FDOE) Volunteer of the Year finalist, noting her more than 700 volunteer hours over the past year. He highlighted her leadership as PFA President, support of school programs and events, and efforts to strengthen family engagement and school culture.

The Director of Safety and Security, Matthew Boyack, presented the quarterly Office of Safe Schools report in accordance with Section 1001.212(13)(c), Florida Statutes. The report identified that during the third quarter of the 2025–26 school year, three campuses, approximately 7 percent of district schools, were inspected or reinspected, with one school found to have no safety requirement deficiencies.

Year to date data reflected 12 total inspections, with 10 schools passing initial inspections without deficiencies, resulting in an 83 percent first visit compliance rate. The two schools that initially received findings have since passed reinspections, bringing the district to 100 percent compliance for all schools inspected this year.

The report noted that this performance reflects the ongoing commitment of school leaders, teachers, and support staff to maintaining safe and secure learning environments across the district.

V. Kidwell provided an update on behalf of the Clay County Education Association and spoke about the importance of supporting educators and public schools. She discussed concerns regarding the state’s voucher system, public school funding, teacher pay, and accountability standards, while emphasizing the constitutional responsibility to provide a high quality public education system. Ms. Kidwell encouraged the board to publicly advocate for increased public school funding and presented a proposed resolution for the board’s consideration related to support for public education and educators in Florida.

Board Member Ashley Gilhousen recognized Teacher Appreciation Week and expressed appreciation for the impact teachers and staff have on students throughout Clay County District Schools. Board Member Robert Alvero shared that he partnered with the Clay Education Foundation to award scholarships to two District 2 students and expressed appreciation for the foundation’s assistance with the scholarship process. 

Board Member Beth Clark thanked community members and businesses that supported Bus Driver Appreciation Week activities and requested consideration of a future proclamation related to human trafficking awareness. Mrs. Clark also discussed literacy initiatives, public education funding concerns, and advocacy related to voucher programs and teacher support.

Board Member Michele Hanson recognized the National Day of Prayer and thanked Morning Star Church for hosting a community event. Mrs. Hanson also highlighted career and technical education student recognitions and shared comments regarding teacher support, district initiatives benefiting educators, and advocacy for public education funding.

Board Chair Erin Skipper discussed the board’s efforts to support teachers and students within state funding limitations and highlighted district initiatives intended to benefit educators. Mrs. Skipper also expressed appreciation for teachers, support staff, and transportation employees during Teacher Appreciation Week and congratulated graduating seniors and their families. The meeting was adjourned following board member remarks.
