  • OneClay Leadership Academy

School Board Member Remarks
50. School Board Member Comments
Minutes:

Mrs. Hanson requested an update from Mr. Broskie re how unvetted links in books might be vetted and addressed.  Mrs. Hanson appreciated Mrs. Gilhousen's tenure on the board and how the board worked together to create a book policy to protect students.  She also enjoyed the opportunity and openness of district staff with whom she recently had the opportunity to have unscheduled meetings.  Mr. Blocker's contributions towards the transition of safety and security to Clay County Sheriff's Office were noted.  Mrs. Hanson will reduce her office hours during the summer and directed citizens to the sign-up sheet should they wish to schedule an appointment with her.

Mrs. Clark congratulated Oakleaf High student Maddie Adler, for winning the Regional competition and placing third at the State level in a recent speech contest hosted by the Clay Soil and Water Conservation Board.  She will continue to work to raise awareness of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library with a goal of increasing funding and expanding the eligible zip codes.  The Clay Chamber has worked with Community First and there will be dates forthcoming re four reading events that will be held this summer.  She enjoyed the elementary and secondary graduations and noted this day being the 80th anniversary of D-Day, encouraging citizens to remember the foundational principles of the nation.

Mrs. Skipper enjoyed a family graduating member and noted the importance of God, country, and family.  She echoed Mrs. Hanson's praise of Mr. Blocker and appreciated the work that has enabled forward movement on the book policy, noting that the only books removed are those which violated Florida law.  She appreciated the leadership of community leaders and Sheriff Cook and is pleased with the transfer of safety and security to CCSO.  Teachers were encouraged to enjoy their summers and vacations.

Mrs. Bolla thanked the Clay County District Schools Police Department and Chief Wagner for serving the schools and district so well during the school day, at athletic events, and at school activities.  She has researched the role of Internal Auditor as the budget process continues and the TRIM process begins, noting there is still no budget from the State.  Currently, CCDS has an Internal Accounts Auditor as well as an additional position that was approved to assist the Internal Accounts Auditor, who works with multiple accounts across 43 schools from an "eye level" process.  The proposed Internal Auditor would serve from more of a "sky view".  She has spoken with CFO Gretchen Saunders, St. Johns District Schools, re the necessity of an Internal Auditor when the budget reaches $500M and when multiple accounts are already reviewed annually through Purvis Gray.  Mrs. Bolla advised that Ms. Saunders indicated St. Johns does not have an Internal Auditor despite their $1.2B budget and higher fund balance.  Given that the district is already utilizing a contracted accounting firm and has realized increased expenses for legal fees and from the transfer of safety to CCSO in addition to financial impacts from the Family Empowerment Scholarships, she cannot, in good conscience, add a position that duplicates what is already being done as we continue to be financially transparent and follow all of the rules.  The availability of Dr. Legutko as well as the "financial transparency" section on the district website were also noted.

Mrs. Gilhousen appreciated the honoring of D-Day and noted the recent posthumous discovery of a relative who had served in the Battle of Normandy.
