Minutes:

Superintendent Broskie provided an update re this item, advising the Board has engaged in collaborative discussion and outlining the four (4) affirmative steps currently in place:

  1. Book Challenge Form - a simple and transparent form available on CCDS website to provide information sufficient to have the committee review any questionable book brought forth;
  2. Media Specialists are currently reviewing their library collections;
  3. The purchase of all new library materials has been halted so the process of purchasing may be reviewed and awaited direction from the state may be received;
  4. System of Notification to parents - parents may complete a form that allows them to opt-out of their student accessing any library materials, can restrict specific titles, or can receive an email notification, identifying the book, each time their student checks out a book.

Roger Dailey, Chief Academic Officer, shared that this process began in November 2021 and that there have been immediate responses to calls, addressing concerns, ensuring transparency and collaboration with parents.  The district has currently received 462 challenge forms, only 111 of which are complete, referencing page numbers and specific content.  Not all challenges will require committee review.  Books that obviously violate appropriate standards may come out from the de-selection process and be immediately removed.

Mrs. Gilhousen provided context re a recent news interview she gave and stated she has been greatly encouraged by the work that has been done and the steps that have been taken.  She seeks to include accountability and wants to work collaboratively to remove inappropriate materials.
